ORC 22: Week 1 - Rental Kitchen Update Plans

Hey Folks! This is my THIRD One Room Challenge and I am EXCITED to say the least! In my first ORC, I updated my rental bathroom and balcony . For my second ORC, I updated this and this

living room in my rental home.

For this ORC, I plan on tackling my rental kitchen. The kitchen is fine and functional BUT I KNOW I CAN MAKE IT NICER. Obviously it would be stupid to replace a kitchen that isn't ours. I got a quote of around QAR 25,000 (USD 6,900) from IKEA to replace the cupboards only, so I quickly scratched that. I'm obsessed with checkered floors so if its one thing I will splurge on is retiling over our current tiles. Yes its not reversible and my landlord may have issues but I'm willing to take the gamble. Look at these Pinterest checkered kitchens - do you see why I want them so bad??

I'm still debating whether I should do a light checkered floor or a dark one. Look at those light wood cabinets with that stunning marble slab! Of course I don't have that kind of budget but it OK to dream. MY budget for this update is a conservative QAR 5000 (USD 1370). Is it possible?? We shall see.

My current kitchen is tiled from floor to ceiling and while I don't want to damage the existing tiles by painting them, I'm still unsure how I'll cover them. One option is peel and stick vinyl tiles, another is beadboard. But how do I stick the beadboard on the tiles and make sure it will be removable??? I've seen a DIYer stick contact paper on her kitchen island and then glue on wooden panels. It looked good but I cant remember her account (sigh), I really need to know what glue she used!! I don't know if this would work from floor to ceiling and will it be durable? Here's a beadboard photo for your reference.

So I'm sure about the checkered floors, hiding wall tiles, changing out the countertops with IKEA countertops, replacing the kitchen sink and faucet, painting the cupboards, replacing the hardware and building a breakfast nook. Another thing I really wanted to do is extend the cupboards up close to the ceiling. Astin from yourlifeiswhatyoumakeit did that in her kitchen last year and I have been obsessed with the idea! I also want to house the fridge as she did. Overambitious plans? Stringshoe budget? Thats how I roll y'all! :)

Brace yourselves for photos of my kitchen hehehe.

See where the clock is? I want to build a breakfast nook there. Here's an inspiration photo.

So a bench type of seat, rectangular wood table and a few chairs. Would love to hang a large piece of art over the nook. I'm also thinking about removing the cupboards over the kitchen stove and installing shelves instead. I would also love to add a drywall housing over the exhaust fan to hide it.Heres my to do list for the next 8 weeks:

  • Install checkered floors,

  • hide wall tiles - beadbord or peel and stick

  • change out the countertops with IKEA countertops,

  • replace the kitchen sink and faucet,

  • paint the cupboards,

  • replace the hardware,

  • build a breakfast nook,

  • extend the cupboards up close to the ceiling.

  • replace blinds

  • Add wall sconces

  • repaint the ceiling

  • remove cupboards over stove and replace with shelves

  • house exhaust fan

I'm getting nervous after seeing all what I have to do :/

Lets get the ball rolling x

Sara
